The Legal Aid Society is a private, not-for-profit legal services organization, the oldest and largest in the nation, dedicated since 1876 to providing quality legal representation to low-income New Yorkers.

Our Mission

The Legal Aid Society is dedicated to the belief that no New Yorker should be denied access to justice because of poverty. For nearly 150 years, we have consistently committed our efforts to providing quality legal representation to low-income New Yorkers.

Our Impact

Last year, The Legal Aid Society offered direct legal assistance in nearly 48,000 individual legal matters benefiting nearly 128,000 low-income New Yorkers. The Society’s Civil Practice also maintains an active law reform litigation docket of 24 cases that impacts the lives of millions of low-income families and individuals in New York City.
